The Plan

I figured concrete was simple. Dig a hole, mix some powder with water, pour it in. How hard could it be? ...Narrator voice: it was, in fact, very hard. Here's every mistake I made on my first patio pour, drawn out so you can skip the pain.

Stopped watering after the first day. Let the slab dry out in the sun. Within a week, hairline cracks spiderwebbed across the entire surface.

Concrete doesn't 'dry' โ€” it cures through a chemical reaction that needs moisture. Keep the surface damp for 7 days minimum. Cover with plastic sheeting or wet burlap, and mist with water 2-3 times daily. The longer it stays moist, the stronger it gets.

Concrete Pouring Mistakes FAQ โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

For a small walkway pour, is a 5% waste factor enough instead of 10%?
For small, straightforward walkways with level ground and simple rectangular forms, 5% is usually sufficient. The 10% recommendation is a safety buffer for more complex projects. However, if you're buying bagged concrete, the per-bag coverage is approximate and mixing losses are real โ€” rounding up to the next full bag already builds in extra margin. Bottom line: 5% is adequate for small walkways, but never go below 5% for any project.
If I don't have plasticizer on site, is there a safe way to handle stiff concrete besides adding water?
Yes. First, re-check your water measurement โ€” many DIYers accidentally under-water by misreading the bag instructions. If the ratio is correct and the mix is still too stiff: (1) mix longer โ€” extended mixing (5+ minutes) improves workability without adding water; (2) use a concrete vibrator or tapping the forms with a hammer to help the concrete settle after pouring; (3) if available, a small amount of air-entraining admixture also improves workability. Never add water beyond the bag's specified range โ€” each extra quart can reduce final strength by 10-15%.
In cold, overcast weather, does the 7-day concrete curing period need to be extended?
Yes. The 7-day rule assumes moderate temperatures (50-70ยฐF / 10-21ยฐC). In cold conditions below 50ยฐF (10ยฐC), the hydration reaction slows significantly โ€” concrete that would reach design strength in 7 days at 70ยฐF may need 14-21 days at 40ยฐF. In cold weather: extend moist curing to at least 10-14 days, use insulating blankets, and consider accelerating admixtures. When patching an old concrete slab, must I use concrete with the same PSI rating as the original?

For a thin walkway slab only, can I space form stakes at 1 meter (about 3 feet) apart?
For a 4-inch thick walkway slab with low-height forms (4-6 inch boards), 3-foot (about 90 cm) stake spacing is usually adequate for straight runs โ€” the concrete pressure at only 4 inches of depth is manageable. However, at corners, curves, and any section where the form height exceeds 6 inches, reduce spacing to 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) maximum. Also drive stakes deeper in loose or sandy soil. If you notice any bowing or movement during the pour, stop immediately and add intermediate stakes โ€” it's far easier than cleaning up a blowout.
